Peter Mullan
Each year as part of The BFI London Film Festival, we join forces with the NFTS to deliver Masterclasses designed to get filmmakers thinking about story. Our first event is a Masterclass with the hugely driven and multi-talented writer, actor, and director Peter Mullan, detailed below. A second event - A Masterclass with Alejandro González Iñárritu
- follows next week.

NFTS/Script Factory LFF Masterclass with Peter Mullan
The LFF has screened many films over the years which showcase Peter Mullan's writing, directing and acting talent, including the shorts Fridge (1995), Duck (1998) and Dog Altogether (2007), as well as the features The Magdalene Sisters (2002), Kiss of Life (2003), Criminal (2004) and Boy A (2007). This year the Festival will premiere Neds, which Mullan wrote, directed and produced, as well as acted in. Mullan's early acting career was punctuated by small but standout roles in many films such as Ken Loach's Riff-Raff (1991) and
Peter Mullan's NedsMel Gibson's Braveheart (1995) as well as Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave (1994) and Trainspotting (1996). But Mullan's desire to direct came to the fore and his debut feature Orphans won four awards at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. His acting career also blossomed with his portrayal of the title character in My Name Is Joe (1998), which saw Mullan collaborate for the second time with Loach and earn the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Mullan's experience as an actor has clearly informed his strength as a director, with three impressive features under his belt and his already admirable acting career showing no signs of abating. We are delighted that such a versatile filmmaking talent will be with us to delve into his creative process.
