A Script Factory/NFTS Masterclass
with Susanne Bier, Anders Thomas Jensen & Kristian Levring
A particular attitude to screenplay has been a unifying feature of the hugely varied Dogme films. For this special masterclass as part the 10 Years of Danish Dogme programme now running at London’s Curzon Soho, Writer/Directors Susanne Bier (Open Hearts, Brothers) and Anders Thomas Jensen (whose writing credits include The King Is Alive, Mifune, Open Hearts, Brothers, and who also directs), will be joined on stage by Kristian Levring (who co-wrote and directed The King Is Alive and is one of the four Dogme Brethren), to take a closer look at the Dogme screenplay. Considering the process of story development, the art of screenplay collaboration, and the constraints or liberations of writing material which is destined to be produced in such a particular style, this lively session with three of the Dogme greats will also look to the future and consider the influence of Dogme screenwriting methods on these filmmakers’ post-Dogme work.

TEN YEARS OF DANISH DOGME 1995-2005
In a special season which is now underway at Curzon Soho and continues until Sunday 1 May, TEN YEARS OF DANISH DOGME looks back to the moment, a century after the Lumière brothers presented the world’s first public film screening, when a celebratory symposium was held on 22 March 1995 in Paris. Lars von Trier, the Danish film director known for his controversial and challenging films, took to the podium and introduced a whole new filmmaking concept. On stage at the Odéon Theatre in Paris, von Trier read his text and threw handfuls of red flyers to the enthusiastic audience. It was the Dogme 95 manifesto and with it, the so-called Vow of Chastity: ten rules that rocked the film world.
This month, as the tenth Danish Dogme film, In Your Hands (Annette K. Olesen) is released, as Susanne Bier, one of the Dogme champions, releases her first ‘post-Dogme’ feature Brothers, and as we mark the ten year anniversary for the Dogme 95 manifesto, Curzon Cinemas, the Danish Film Institute and the Danish Embassy present TEN YEARS OF DANISH DOGME.
