‘She’ is Mei, an enigmatic young Chinese woman raised in a backwater, longing for a different life. Escaping to find herself, her journey takes her first to a Chinese city where she finds love, and loses it. On a whim she travels to England, drifting and rootless. All the time, she is learning more about herself, experimenting. Filmmaker and novelist Xiaolu Guo (How is Your Fish Today; A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers), Chinese herself now living in Britain, brings a real energy and freshness to this cross-cultural story.
The film rightly picked up the Golden Leopard at last year’s Locarno Festival - its stylish tone helped by PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish's score.
We’re delighted that Xiaolu Guo will be in conversation with Script Factory’s own Briony Hanson, immediately after this preview.
